They never give up

The European Union should take two years to reflect on why French and Dutch voters rejected the EU constitution and then make a fresh attempt to ratify it.

So says Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel, who has told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in an interview to be published tomorrow that "People are worried about the EU becoming overstretched if it takes in Turkey, Ukraine and other countries."

Schuessel, who is taking over the EU presidency at the beginning of next year, believes that, "If a cautious approach is taken then we can say to the French and Dutch: 'So you see we have understood and acted.'" Then, he adds, "after 2007, if in one or another nation, policy changes have been completed, we can have another attempt (at ratification)."
